” The Collapse ” is a French end-time miniseries by the collective Les Parasites . The series portrays a world that is about to collapse. In various disaster scenarios, the only thing that matters is the struggle for survival. Some people believe that this future is actually ahead of us. These collapsologists are preparing for the downfall of our civilization. Have you ever thought about what you would do in this situation?
The series “The Collapse” comprises eight episodes that take place in different scenarios. However, it is always about the collapse of industrial society, which is portrayed very realistically. The twenty-minute episodes immerse the viewer deeply in the action. It’s about the fight for gasoline at the gas station, the last groceries on almost empty shelves or the supply of home residents.
Fear is the defining element in the entire series. But does this fear motivate those affected to act?

You do not find out why the complete collapse is imminent. However, the series shows the consequences that occur in rapid succession. The audience feels the stress of the actors up close.
In this collapsed system, the state has lost all authority ; only the law of the stronger prevails. Money now only matters to a few because of a lack of basic resources. It’s about saving your own life. Looting and violence are the order of the day, and anyone can become a perpetrator. The fast-paced film sequences are captivating and create extreme tension that force the viewer to watch the series until the end.
The Collapse: is this series realistic?
Viewers can’t let go of the show until they know how people are doing in this situation. The individual episodes are extremely realistic: selfishness and violence prevail, the actors are forced to act immorally in order to survive. You would never do such things under any other circumstance.
The Collapse isn’t just another apocalyptic series. The dystopia shown is realistic and in some cases even seems very familiar to us. We see political discussions in which nobody talks about the environment, and if they do, then only to criticize the discussion partner’s ideas; a scientist who talks about stopping the catastrophe by taking radical steps. But nobody listens … this is nothing new to us.
Who is willing to forego something? What are governments doing to protect their citizens? Who cares about the future? This is exactly why this series creates fear. Some situations are so realistic that they create a feeling of déjà vu in many a viewer. In reality, does this have any positive impact that will bring about change?
How did this series come about?
Les Parasites is a collective founded by former students of the École Internationale de Création Audiovisuelle et de Réalisation . In order to remain independent, this group is mainly financed through a Tipeee account. Short films are produced that are available for rental free of charge.
Thanks to this independence, works such as Artificial Love or La Boucherie Éthique could be realized. It is about climate change and animal husbandry. Mainly ecological problems are discussed.
The collective Les Parasites has long been interested in the topic of climate change and its consequences. In October 2018, those responsible for YouTube moderated a discussion with Pablo Servigne, one of the founders of the movement of collapsologists, and the astrophysicist Jacques Blamont.
These committed directors know that we can no longer turn a blind eye to the climate threat. The series also strongly criticizes the current politics of small steps and indifference.
The Collapse seems to be inspired by the Olduvai theory. In it, the engineer Richard C. Duncan postulated in 1989 that industrial civilization would have a lifespan of a maximum of 100 years.
The characters in this series seem to be more helpful than in other post-apocalyptic classics like “Mad Max” or “The Road”. But that’s not the point. The system may already collapse, but what can we do?
